This study empirically investigates the impact of shared accommodation platforms, such as Airbnb, on the number of openings and closures, as well as the closure rates of domestic accommodation businesses, through econometric analysis. The advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) and the spread of the sharing economy have brought significant changes to the lodging industry. As a representative example of the sharing economy, Airbnb operates over 7 million accommodations in more than 220 countries worldwide. The introduction of such platforms has created a new competitive environment and operational model for existing accommodation businesses. This study aims to analyze the impact of Airbnb's introduction on domestic accommodation businesses in South Korea. To this end, the study compares and analyzes accommodation data before and after the introduction of Airbnb, highlighting the differences between standardized accommodations and personalized accommodations. The results reveal that the number of openings and closures of existing accommodation businesses has increased following the introduction of Airbnb, showing a dual impact. In particular, personalized accommodations have responded more sensitively to the introduction of Airbnb, exhibiting greater variability in openings and closures. These findings suggest that new competitive factors, such as Airbnb, have a significant impact on existing accommodation businesses, indicating the need for strategies to address these challenges. This study contributes to the lodging industry by providing strategies to effectively respond to the era of the sharing economy represented by Airbnb. Furthermore, it suggests the necessity for additional research on the long-term impact of Airbnb's introduction on the operation of domestic accommodation businesses.
