한국 문화연구의 정치경제학적 패러다임에 대한 모색 : 한류의 혼종성 논의를 중심으로

초록

The purpose of this essay is to expand the scope and horizon of the discourse surrounding a popular cultural phenomenon, Korean Wave, especially by complementing partial perspectives emphasizing the hybridization thesis and creative reading of the text, often found in media-oriented cultural studies. My central contention is to incorporate the critical political economy perspective with the culturalist approach focusing on text or the audiences. For example, I highlight the virtue of hybridity concept in analyzing the Korean Wave, and how it differs from more linear models. At the same time, I call for more astute attention to critical political economy paradigm as a useful framework to supplement some blind spots found in the hybridization thesis. Futhermore, I suggest a potential and progressive node for more critical, practical and holistic cultural studies by articulating the role of transnational cultural capital, state, and culture industry, and mutual relationship among them.
