표류선, 청하지 않은 손님 -외국 선박의 조선 표류 관련기록 探討-

초록

This paper is due to examine the records on foreign drifting ships roved around Jeju island and the west-south coast of Korea during the latter Josun Dynasty. Most records were concerned about Chinese merchant ships. Rarely records on Japanese and other foreign ships were existed. As these materials are scattered in several anthologies, it is necessary to collect and arrange them. After researching the materials, as the result, 17 cases of drifting ships were found. And it confirmed the processing and the interest which is concerned to drifting. Dasan Jeong Yakyong left the manuals on processing drifting ships of Josun government in Haebanggo 「海防考」 and Pyosunmunjung 「漂船問情」. He concretely recorded 21 cases of drifting ships. These shows how many times the drifting of Chinese ships broke out in west-south coast and the local officers and people seriously thought about dealing with these accidents. Most of the early records on foreign drifting ships arose from simple curiosity about foreigners and desire of ostentation. The records, however, gradually gathered the information on foreign countries and indicated higher consciousness of the records on political trends in the area. Moreover, these records had acted as the opportunity of heightening to understand outer world through the contact and the reception of various cultures. Also the technical investigations such as examining foreign ships and appling into ships of Josun were done. Drifting foreign ships in the west-south coast were a passage for people of Josun to understand outer world. At the same time, dealing of these accidents brings about the very unbearable and tough procedures. From now on, it is necessary for the studies on drifting records to pay attention to the cultural or interchangeable meaning of these contact as well as the historical approaches on treating castaways.
