The Effect of Maternal Self-Esteem on Warm Parenting Behaviors among Mothers of Full-Term and Preterm Infants: The Mediating Effect of Maternal Depression and the Moderated Mediation Effect of Maternal Group

초록

This study examined the mediating effects of depression and the moderated mediation effects by the maternal group in the relationship between self-esteem and warm parenting among mothers of full-term and preterm infants. Using cross-sectional data from the 5th wave (2008) of the Panel Study on Korean Children, 1,597 mothers (1,519 full-term, 78 preterm) were analyzed after excluding missing cases. Mediation (Model 4), moderation (Model 1), and moderated mediation (Model 14) were tested using bootstrapping (10,000 samples, 95% CI). First, maternal self-esteem had a direct positive effect on warm parenting and an indirect effect through depression, indicating partial mediation. Second, the maternal group moderated the relationship between depression and warm parenting. Higher depression was associated with decreased warm parenting in full-term mothers but relatively increased warm parenting in preterm mothers. Third, moderated mediation was significant. The indirect effect of self-esteem on warm parenting via depression was significant only among full-term mothers. These findings suggest that the relationships among maternal self-esteem, depression, and warm parenting vary according to birth status.
