The Sequential Mediating Effects of Self-Esteem and Career Adaptability in the Relationship Between Forgiveness Disposition and Life Satisfaction Among First-Year University Students

초록

This study investigated the sequential mediating roles of self-esteem and career adaptability in the relationship between forgiveness disposition and life satisfaction among first-year university students. Data were drawn from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018; N=1,551), and PROCESS Macro Model 6 was employed to test the proposed model. Forgiveness disposition positively predicted life satisfaction in the model without mediators (B=.356, p<.001); however, the direct effect became non-significant when mediators were included (B=−.022, p=.635), suggesting that the relationship is largely explained through indirect pathways. The indirect effect through self-esteem was the strongest (Effect=.411, 95% CI [.347, .479]), followed by the sequential pathway through self-esteem and career adaptability (Effect=−.018, 95% CI [−.031, −.007]). The indirect effect through career adaptability alone was negative (Effect=−.015, 95% CI [−.033, −.003]), which may be understood as a suppression effect rather than reflecting a substantive negative influence. These findings suggest that life satisfaction among first-year university students could be explained by the interplay of emotional disposition, self-evaluative processes, and career-related adaptive resources.
