A “Culture of Peace” for Sustainable Peace: Implications and Tasks in South Korea

초록

This study tries to analyze the concept of “culture of peace,” examine the problems of peace discourse in South Korea, and apply peace culture to Korea. The culture of peace aims at promoting peace through fostering peace education, human right, democratic participation, the value of tolerance and solidarity, and international security. Particularly, the peace culture concept tries to build peace by inducing change in value and identity. In Korea, a narrow perception on peace and a dichotomous way of thinking have been maintained because of the division and subsequent formation of the ‘culture of cold war.’ Accordingly, the features of peace culture have usefulness in solving the problems in Korea. First, the peace culture may help curing the pain from the culture of cold war which has been a cause of structural violence. Second, it will contribute to recovering exclusive relationships by encouraging the value of understanding and harmonious identity. Third, the comprehensive approach to peace will broaden narrow perspective on peace among the Koreans. Finally, the culture of peace will encourage the cooperation between the government and the civil society for peaceful inter-Korean relationships.
