Does the Harmful Information Regarding Food Safety Affect the Consumption Pattern of Consumers? - Focusing on Fukushima Nuclear Accident -

초록

We analyze how the information in Social Network Service(SNS) regarding the outbreak of Fukushima nuclear accident influences the consumption of fish and pork. We use RDA consumer panel data and Daumsoft’s bigdata from January 2011 to November 2013. We find that the more the negative information in SNS about Fukushima nuclear accident, the less the fish consumption, but the more the pork consumption. Such effects increase with education, number of children, and the interest in food origin and safety, but decrease with age. These are new findings in the literature. We make following additional contributions. First, we exploit under-researched SNS and RDA consumption panel data in combination. Second, we analyze both direct and substitutive effects of environmental disasters and SNS on consumption. Third, our analysis is at the level of cuts for one of the most popular meats, pork.
