초점화 개념의 서사 교육적 위상 - ｢최척전｣을 중심으로 -

초록

The purpose of this study is to re-examine the educational status of the concept of focalization in narrative education. While focalization is actively utilized in evaluating narrative comprehension, it is not explicitly addressed in the national curriculum, leading to a discrepancy between instruction and assessment. Recognizing focalization as an essential element inherent in all storytelling, this study analyzes the modes and effects of focalization in the classical Korean novel, Choecheok-jeon. The analysis reveals that in passages depicting the tragedies of war and family separation, internal focalization vividly portrays the horrific scenes and the resulting shock and helplessness of the characters. Conversely, in scenes of dramatic reunion, the narrative shifts from internal focalization to external or zero focalization, effectively elevating individual narratives into a broader saga of universal humanism and social solidarity. Based on these findings, the study identifies the educational status of focalization as follows: First, as a mechanism that achieves aesthetic configuration of the thematic consciousness of a work through the distribution of narrative information, focalization is a essential concept for learners to understand the deep structures of narrative texts, including classical novels. Second, focalization serves as a cognitive mechanism that allows learners to experience the poetic principles and aesthetic effects of a text while simultaneously reflecting on the process of reader reception. In this regard, it explains the process through which the aesthetic configuration of a text is transferred into the reader's psychological response.
