초록
While extensive research has investigated the role of firms’ capabilities in the open innovation (OI) process, Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) is often viewed as a universal facilitator. However, this perspective overlooks the potential costs of orchestration. Drawing on Resource Orchestration Theory (ROT), this study investigates the “dark side” of EO, proposing that a strong mobilizing vision can trigger “orchestration misalignment” when incompatible with specific external knowledge sources. We categori ze external search into market-driven and science-driven strategies based on their institutio nal logics and examine how EO moderates their impact on product innovation. Analyzing data from 2,353 manufacturing firms in the 2020 Korean Innovation Survey (KIS), our findings reveal that EO acts as a double-edged sword. Contrary to the “more is better” assumption, EO negatively moderates (attenuates) the positive link between market-driven search and radical product innovation, suggesting that high-EO firms may suffer from strategic myopia that filters out valuable market signals. Furthermore, EO negatively moderates the link between science-driven search and incremental product innovation, indicating an “over-orchestration” of complex knowledge for simple tasks. These insights challenge the prevailing pro-EO consensus, demonstrating that for resource -constrained firms, the efficacy of external search is contingent upon the precise alignment between the firm’s strategic orientation and the logic of the acquired knowledge.
