A note on the "there"-construction verbs

This paper is concerned with the question what verbs can occur with the expletive "there" in English. Reviewing Kuno & Takami's (2000) interesting counterexamples to Burzio's (1986) unaccusativity-related hypothesis and their functional proposals, we argue that the unaccusativity still plays a major role in defining the "there"-construction verbs in English if the concept is extended to a property of a phrase as well as a lexical item.
