북한이탈청소년의 학교적응에 관한 질적 연구- 대안학교와 일반학교 비교를 중심으로

This study aims to examine school adjustment of North Koreanadolescent refugees in two different settings: alternative schools and regularschools. Qualitative research method was employed through the interview oftwenty North Korean adolescent refugees who are enrolled in, have dropped outof, or have graduated from South Korean high schools. Factors of influencewere largely divided into four-self, household, school, local community-whichwere, then, further split into thirteen subcategories. Results suggest that on theself level, positive self-concept and clear career vision aid one's successful schooladjustment. Within the household, parents' low levels of academic support,interaction with teachers, participation in private education, and conversationswith child harmed the adaptation process. Most parents had high academicexpectations-Bachelor's degree or higher. However, a few parents of participantsin regular schools, who were aware of the high unemployment rate in Korea,held low academic expectations-high school or associate degree. In short, nolarge differences were spotted between alternative schools and regular schools interms of the self and the household. School and community factors, on theother hand, were impacting alternative schools and regular schools vastlydifferently. At regular schools, conflicts with teachers, peer relationships,academic stress, and cultural differences were negatively influencing NorthKorean adolescent refugees. Moreover, North Korean adolescent refugees inalternative schools were not actively taking advantage of various educationalsupport programs and mentoring services offered by the local community. Such outcomes will enable the development of government policies based on variousschool types.
