초록
This study focuses on the recent cases of medical schools implementing full-scale online classes due to COVID-19 and aims to analyze the aspects of self-directed learning among medical students. For this purpose, a qualitative study was conducted on 12 students who followed the medical school curriculum through online classes during the first semester of 2020. As a result, medical students adapted to the online learning environment by selecting the best-fit learning environment for their studies, and autonomously arranging the video lectures the professors uploaded to fit their schedules. One of the most preferred aspects of this transition was that the medical students—who boast an intense academic workload—could now manage their study schedule to suit their learning patterns. Students also actively utilized the tools available on the online education system such as repeat, speed, stop, and internet searching for information. Such online information-seeking behavior while listening to online classes sometimes created additional in-depth learning opportunities for students, when their interests aligned with the course material. This means that online classes gave extended learning opportunities beyond the formal curriculum. These research findings are meaningful as they discuss the experiences of medical students adapting to the changes in their learning environment by leading self-directed study in an online education system, unlike the traditional lecture-based course design and memory-based learning. This study hopes to serve as a useful foundation for future improvements in the medical school curriculum.
