박경리의『시장과 전장』에 나타난 낭만성과 숭고

초록

This study focused on examining romanticism and sublimity in The Market and War Field by Park Gyeong-ri. The novel depicts changes to the lives of main characters that had a strong romantic disposition by transposing the historical situations of Korean War into the contrasting spatial structure of "market" and "war field." In the novel, Park narrated the lives of two main characters with a romantic tendency through the narrative of heroine Nam Ji-yeong that had a noble character close to mysophobia and that of hero Ha Gi-hun that believed the communist ideology. When their stories are considered together with the act of Lee Ga-hwa, the girlfriend of Gi-hun, finding her way to the base of North Korean partisan for love, it seems apparent that those three characters are all transcendent separate from the reality and have a romantic attribute of pursuing a yearning for a distant place. The romantic disposition of three characters, however, reveals the sublime beauty defined by Longinus, Burke, and Kant in the ravages of war. The sublime beauty is a phenomenon that one undergoes when his or her fear or unpleasant feeling in front of absolute power of the object is displaced with a pleasant one and accordingly feels an internal enhancement. Stirring an emotional enhancement in people, the sublime beauty is revealed in Ji-yeong when she recognizes the dignity of life. Her sublimity of showing the dignity of life from the ways that she does her best to save the life of her husband and mother whom she kept at a respectful distance before the war and by the attitude that she mourns the death of her mother. Gi-hun's sublimity is observed in the ways that he sticks to his ideology as a romantic communist, which is different from Ji-yeong's case in nature. He is a representation of intellectuals to show the sublimity of ideologies. His girlfriend Ga-hwa is an unworldly character that even finds her way to Mt. Jiri where the North Korean partisan hides in order to keep her love. Her sublime love is presented in a tragic form before the violence of war. Park's novels reach a culmination at The Land. As she continued her literary journey toward The Land, her major short stories and novels became tributaries and permeated into the vastness of The Land. Her The Market and War Field depicts the sublime beauty based on romantic attributes. Sublimity of respect for life, ideology, and love demonstrated by the romantic subjects does not remain as a temporary phenomenon only found in the work, which writes the pre-history of sublime beauty that is a characteristic of The Land.
