『천주강생성경직해』(天主降生聖經直解) 경문(經文)에 나타난 번역 양상 — 봉건 왕정시기 문화 반영 번역을 중심으로

Tianzhu Jiangsheng Shengjing Zhijie is the first case in which a Western missionary translated a gospel into Chinese with the consciousness of translating the scriptures in the Chinese character culture. In this book, some of the Gospels were presented according to the Catholic liturgy, and the Bible used at this time was the Vulgate. This paper explains the characteristics of translation by comparing some bible verses of Shengjing Zhijie with the Vulgate. The essence of this article is that Shengjing Zhijie reflects the culture of China’s feudal monarchy. First, China used different words to describe the person depending on their status within the feudal kingdom. This is reflected in the book. Second, the Confucian culture that emphasizes the relationship between the king and his servants was reflected in this book, emphasizing the immediate obedience to the king’s authority. Chapter 3 exemplifies what kind of change in meaning is actually achieved by translations reflecting such cultures. Eventually, when translating Vulgate, Shengjing Zhijie was transformed into a reflection of the cultural characteristics of feudal China. In doing so, it explained Jesus’s existence as king and had the effect of further enhancing his authority.
