젠더지리학을 통해 본 소설의 공간과 장소 －최은미의 ｢근린｣, ｢백 일 동안｣을 중심으로－

초록

This study analyzes the meaning of space and place in Choi Eun-mi’s short stories “Geunrin” and “BaekIldongan” from the perspective of gender geography. Gender geography adds the concept of gender to the humanistic geography, explaining the reason and process of having unique attributes in each person or place according to differences in lifestyle, meaning, etc. In the process of personal place experience and space semantics, Paying attention to the relationship between gender and space, analyzing the meaning of space in literature and the life of the characters living in it will help to understand the culture and the world projected into the work as well as the in-depth appreciation of the work. “Geunrin” is a work that shows the mutual penetration of the city’s public and private areas and the way people relate to gender and space in modern society. The mutual penetration of the public and private domains shown in this short story means the dissolution of the space organized by the social system. The figures in the neighborhood park, the main background, are mostly women, maintaining contradictory neighbors in anonymity. Ideology serves to consolidate the boundaries of social space, and those who fail to comply with it become alienated from the social spatial system. It is difficult to maintain a society as the number of people who are maladjusted to the existing social system increases. The cracks in the space eventually lead to the collapse of the boundary, the disintegration of the space. “BaekIldongan” is a short story that shows the process of discouraging a man’s desire to pursue a mother-oriented space, otherwise a mythical space. The main character Kang Sang-ki has pain such as longing for his mother, loss of family ties, and disappearance of his lover. His desire is to build a Jamijae in his hometown of Jaeigol to own the 100 days he spent with his mother. However, the relationship between Jaeigol’s femininity and wooden house, and the poop of a carpenter who damaged the chastity of the Jamihwa tree symbolizing his mother, are hindering the completion of the mythical space sought by the main character. A carpenter’s excretory behavior, which represents gender image and masculinity in a private space called Jaeigol, frustrated the main character’s desire.
