The Effect of Elementary School Students’ Perceived Parenting Attitude and Internet Use Motives on Internet Addiction: Self-Control as a Mediator

초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of perceived parenting attitude and internet use motives on internet addiction in elementary school students. Also this study was done to test whether self-control mediated the effect of perceived parenting attitude and internet use motives on internet addiction. The questionnaires were administered to 597 elementary school students in Seoul. The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, parents’ love significantly reduced internet addiction. However, parents’ rejection and parents’ overprotection significantly increased internet addiction. Second, information motive significantly reduced internet addiction. However, recreation/rest motive and social interaction motive significantly increased internet addiction. Third, the effect of parents’ love on internet addiction was completely mediated by self-control, which means that parents’ love increased self-control, thus contributing to decreased internet addiction. Fourth, the effect of information motive on internet addiction was completely mediated by self-control, which means that information motive increased self-control, thus contributing to decreased internet addiction. The implications and limitations of this study were discussed.
