초록

The purpose of Japan to publish guidebooks about situations in Joseon during the 1900’s is to resolve food shortage resulted from the increase of population by encouraging Japanese’ immigration into Joseon and also justify its invasion into Joseon. And guidebooks for a voyage to Joseon published in this period recommended Japanese to sail to Joseon, ‘a treasure house’, and included the success stories of those with only limited capital. And guidebooks about situations in Joseon were written by journalists, and they described Joseon people as barbarians with the dichotomy of ‘civilization’ and ‘savageness’. Guidebooks about the colonial management of Joseon were about intention to realize economic assimilation through trade and commerce or migrational colonization and then promote ‘Naeseondonghwa (Joseon’s assimilation into Japan)’. And geography books were written to conquer Joseon after the victory in Russo-Japanese Wars and then attempt to advance into the continent to prepare for annexation. The reason why Japan published guidebooks for immigration into Joseon in the 1910’s was to include the territory of Joseon into theirs and then take them as reference material for their ruling. It is noticeable that in this period, the guidebooks were published by the officials from the government general, Japanese bureaucrats, Joseon inspection teams, Japanese military authorities, or journalists residing in Joseon. They focused on how to assimilate Joseon people and what businesses they were going to be engaged in. The officials of the government general investigated Joseon using recent statistical data while they were holding the post. Bureaucrats dispatched from Japan were supposed to observe the actual situations in Joseon and figure out problems in order to reflect them to their policy-making. The inspection teams from the Niigata, Hiroshima, and Shiga prefectures did explore the possibilities of economic advancement. The guidebooks written by military authorities contain information needed by soldiers and their families for their work and living in Joseon. Journalists residing in Joseon introduced Joseon’s history and ethnicity, economic situations, promising businesses, or attitudes needed to Japanese immigrants.
