The Effects of Daily Boredom and Negative Affect on Attention Restoration and Subjective Well-Being in Travel

초록

Travel restrictions may induce boredom, and excessive boredom can heighten negative emotions. Consequently, individuals may seek travel to natural destinations as a means of psychological recovery. This study aims to identify the adverse effects of boredom experienced under external travel constraints and to empirically examine whether visits to natural tourist destinations facilitate attention restoration and enhance perceived happiness. An online survey was conducted among individuals who had taken nature-based trips in September 2020, with data collected at three time points: before, during, and after the trip. A total of 645 valid responses were analyzed. Structural equation modeling revealed positive effects from boredom to negative emotions, from negative emotions to attention restoration, and from attention restoration to subjective happiness. However, boredom was found not to directly influence attention restoration. These findings are significant as they confirm the emotional recovery and enhanced happiness of individuals experiencing boredom and negative emotions under travel restrictions.
