Family Medicine Board Certification Examination in Korea

초록

The Korean Family Medicine Board Certification Examination played a major role in establishing accountability forproducing good primary care physicians in Korea for three decades. The examination consists of two phases: the first phasewritten test (250 multiple choice questions), and second phase practice exam (50 slide-triggered questions and two stationsfor clinical practice examination). The clinical practice examination (CPX) was introduced in 2009, and it will be extendedinto the whole part of the 2nd phase of the test in 2014. Pass/fail will be decided only by the CPX total scores. The reliabilityof the written test was very high, above 0.95, and that of the CPX was 0.74. The whole CPX will need a new standard settingmethod, strategies for management of standardized patients, and increase in the cost related with logistics, strategies forrecruitment, and training of standardized patients, and increase in cost related to logistics. The written knowledge testneeds to be changed into a computer-based test to reduce document work and information sharing among examinees.Psychometrical supports are planned for a successful launch of the whole CPX in 2014.
