A phenomenological study of hotel workers' work-study experience: Focusing on doctoral courses for hotel workers

초록

The purpose of this study is to understand and explore the meaning of experience, the motivation to participate in learning, and the difficulties experienced by hotel workers who are pursuing a doctoral course as both work and study. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 6 hotel workers working in a 5-star hotel, phenomenological research methods were conducted, and Moustakas' Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method was applied for data analysis. The results of this study were derived from a total of 15 theme, 54 meaning units, and 398 significant statements. The motivation for participation in learning includes ‘the energetic time together’, ‘learning, as a thirsty’, ‘my own goal of leading me’, ‘leap to a true expert’, ‘getting older, getting more anxious’, ‘support is the source of my strength’ six themes were derived. Experienced difficulties were derived from ‘struggling for compatibility’, ‘frustrated and unfortunate graduate classes’, ‘a stiff brain, hard time about writing thesis’, ‘myself of longterm investments’, and ‘walk on eggshells around someone’. As a result of the analysis, the four themes of experiences ‘a new me’, ‘the power of my life’, ‘I am an Influencer’, ‘my own path to take a step and a step by step’ were derived. This study is meaningful in that it analyzes in-depth the experience of hotel workers' doctoral course experience, motivation to participate in learning, and experience of difficulties, and suggests improvement plans in the hotel industry based on the results.
