A Study on the Subject of Culture and Romanticism of The Portrait of the Days of Youth by Lee Mun-Yeol

초록

The purposes of this study were to make an attempt to re-read The Portrait of the Days of Youth by Lee Mun-yeol as a bildungsroman and investigate the significance of its subject of culture and romanticism. The study placed a focus on two subjects: first, it examined the grounds for the novel as a bildungsroman and the meanings of culture of the protagonist young man; secondly, it noted that the subject of culture in the novel was romantic and that the romantic subject of culture was very closely related to the popularization movement of reading in the 1960s. The development of the present study benefited much from the opinions of Wilhelm Dilthey and Franco Moretti that had an influence on the concept of bildungsromans in Germany since they were influential in an investigation into the characteristics of subject of culture in the novel. The investigator named the novel "bildungsroman" in addition to "growth novel" under which category it was generally placed because of the "youth" of the main character Lee Yeong-hun and his passion and agony that accompanied his youth. Dilthey and Moretti defined bildungsromans as a genre of novels expressing youth as a symbolic form of modernity. Bildungsromans are in a traditional point between two classes, the bourgeoisie and the nobility. Being active at a time when modernity is born, "young people" are characterized by constant self-upgrading and transformation, mobility, uncertainty, and desire for growth and development. In The Portrait of the Days of Youth, the protagonist "Lee Yeong-hun" bears some resemblance to the subjects of bildungsromans in Western Europe. He has intense self-consciousness as an individual, undergoes intellectual and cultural inquiry and wandering, and shows a strong pursuit of the world of art. It is the most noteworthy that "poverty" that is daily fatigue seen in him is depicted in the embodiment of college students of the 1960s or intellectuals and cultured persons. In the 1960s, people took increasingly more policy interest in "reading" as culture across the society. The liberal culture movement is significant in that it exhibited the nature of culturalism and humanism and the patterns of "nation(nationalism)" and the public being combined with them along with the situations involved with "intellectual gaps and culture" in South Korea those days. Such reading movements seem to have exerted considerable impacts on the protagonist that received secondary education in the middle and late 1960s, which is found in many parts of the novel most showing interest, reverence, and worship for "books." A subject of culture created under the influence of those social phenomena in the 1960s, Lee Yeong-hun has a very strong romantic tendency, which is reproduced by his respect for absolute beauty, manifestation of desperate consciousness, and longing for young days. Those patterns demonstrate that a bildungsroman as a growth narrative showing the self-completion of an individual takes harmony between self-determination and social integration as an ideology of culture.
