Open social innovation activities of South Korean firms: A case study

초록

Recently, South Korean firms are increasingly investing in and supporting social ventures and impact startups that create social value, as corporate management places greater emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. These activities are viewed as an open social innovation from an academic standpoint. Although scholars have examined various aspects of open social innovation, further research on firm-level open social innovation activities for solving societal and environmental issues is needed. In this study, we conducted a multiple case study on South Korean firms' open social innovation projects to reveal how these firms run their projects aimed at solving societal and environmental problems. We used a pattern-matching method to analyze open social innovation projects of South Korean firms from 2015 to 2022. This study revealed that most South Korean firms participate in open social innovation projects with business accelerators or investment firms specializing in creating social impacts. Moreover, South Korean firms do not initially invest in equity for startups in their open social innovation projects, but consider equity investment for startups with high potential to create value. Finally, we found that South Korean firms affiliated with business groups consider strategic synergies with other affiliates when conducting open social innovation projects. This study contributes to research on open innovation and provides managerial insights for implementing open innovation projects.
