Optical responses from zero optical-path-length object

We address a fundamental question – What is the ultimately minimal embodiment of optical objects that produce useful optical effects? We show that such an object does not require non-zero physical and optical-path-length volume. Two- dimensional polarizing sheets are the minimal optical objects and practically realizable using 2D materials or polarizing ceramics.
