중학생의 자기애가 사이버폭력에 미치는 영향: 자기자비의 조절효과를 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of middle school students’ overt and covert narcissism on their experience as cyberbullying aggressors and victims, and to analyze the moderating effect of self-compassion on these variables. The subjects consist of 265 middle school students in the metropolitan area of Seoul. The results are as follows. First, the students’ covert and overt narcissism were positively correlated to cyberbullying aggressors and victims. The students’ self-compassion, in contrast, was negatively correlated to covert and overt narcissism, and their experience cyberbullying aggressors and victims. Second, hierarchical regression analyses show that, contrary to the expectation that self-compassion will moderate the behaviors of aggressors and victims in the case of cyberbullying, self-compassion is found to gratify the desire of cyberbullying aggression. This gratification indicates that narcissists, be they overt or covert, are likely to be more aggressive in cyber space when they can find people to sympathize with their feelings more than when they cannot not. On the other hand, no moderating effect of self-compassion was found in the relationship between narcissism and cyberbullying victims. These findings suggest that overtly and covertly narcissistic people have surprisingly different ideas about self-compassion. The results of this study illuminate that in both counseling centers and student advising offices, educators should pay a particular attention in counseling or advising students with narcissistic nature, considering these students' unique cognitive and psychological traits. The study also calls for a follow-up study that examines other factors affecting narcissistic nature.
