조선시대 한문 산문 속 개의 문학적 형상화와 유교 윤리의 구현
초록
This study explores the literary representations of dogs in classical Chinese prose during the Joseon Dynasty, focusing on their embodiment of Confucian ethical values. A total of forty-four prose works, gathered from comprehensive anthologies and individual collections, are categorized into three types: loyal dogs (忠犬), filial dogs (孝犬), and righteous dogs (義犬). Each category is analyzed in terms of its ethical symbolism and social function. Loyal dog narratives highlight dogs’ unwavering loyalty and heroic rescues of their masters in times of peril, thereby exemplifying ideal lord vassal relationships grounded in Confucian loyalty. Filial dog tales emphasize maternal devotion and filial piety, reflecting the restoration of family ethics in the late Joseon period. Righteous dog stories employ allegorical satire to criticize social injustices and advocate for moral reform through accounts of dogs repaying kindness. Rather than focusing on the ecological traits of dogs, these narratives interpret canine behaviors through the lens of Confucian ideology, indirectly addressing themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the aspiration for ethical restoration in post-war Joseon society. Ultimately, these works go beyond simple animal stories to offer significant literary achievements that intertwine idealized social values with critical reflections on contemporary realities. This research contributes to expanding understanding in the fields of Confucian ethical discourse and animal literature in late Joseon Korea.
