Yeats’s epitaph is a central key to understand his compositions and consciousness of death. At first glance, his attitude toward death seems contradictory. In “The Apparitions” and “Man and the Echo,” on one hand, he asserts that there is no death as absence, nothingness or unknown existence; in “Death,” he applauds the great man’s transcendence of all dread and hope of death. Yeats, on the other, admits his total dependence on the Muse of death for the aesthetic life of his poetry. For him, an epitaph mediates and connects both death as nothing and death as an inspiration for poetic creation. By locating the dead in the mind of poet and in the text and by making the dead speak, his epitaph marks the presence of death in the text and reveals the poet’s own self-questing drive toward death.
