포스트모더니티 공간의 다의성과 사회문화적 함의 스타필드 코엑스(COEX) 별마당 도서관을 중심으로

초록

This study analyzed the ‘Starfield COEX Byeolmadang Library’, which is called the representative landmark of Gang-nam district, Seoul, Korea. This space is used as a meeting square, a space of seeking information and knowledge, as well as a venue of diverse cultural practice and enjoyment. Also, the Byeolmadang Library is providing the public with the ability to accommodate cultural diversity and accumulate knowledge through a variety of activities. At the same time, the entire underground structure of COEX was filled the elements of splendid and magnificent spectacle through the concept of ‘fun’ and ‘pleasure’. In particular, the space combines the characteristics of postmodernity with the desires derived from the public’s everyday life. As a result, the mode of production of post-capitalism was emerging. Through this, we found that the space of COEX is intended to deepen pleasure of a virtual, as well as a space that maximizes corporate profits and revamps its image. In addition, the cause of enjoying and internalizing space by subjects are analyzed in connection with the social and cultural context of post-capitalism. Especially, the analysis was conducted using David Harvey's perspective on ‘space’ and Guy Debord's concept of ‘spectacle,’ in order to interpret the implications of space and society. In particular, for the purpose of decoding the subject and culture through urban spatial media, COEX Byeolmadang Library is interpreted, and the actions of the public visiting and enjoying this space, as well as some of the common and repetitive statements they make, are comprehensively analyzed.
